Amsterdam is de grootste stad en (titulaire) hoofdstad van Nederland sinds 20 april 1808, doch grondwettelijk pas sinds 1983 bij de grondwetsherziening. Amsterdam is echter geen residentie, aangezien de Staten-Generaal en de regering in Den Haag gevestigd zijn. Men spreekt in het Amsterdams ook wel van Mokum (afgeleid van het Hebreeuwse woord voor 'stad', "makom"). Het is één van de steden in de Randstad. De stad ligt in de provincie Noord-Holland, aan de monding van de Amstel en aan het IJ. De Amsterdamse haven is via het Noordzeekanaal verbonden met de Noordzee.

Op 1 april 2008 telde de stad Amsterdam 751.250 inwoners. Het hoogste aantal sinds 1976, toe te schrijven aan de hoeveelheid opgeleverde woningen (ook in 1929 overschreed het inwoneraantal al de 750.000). De stad is onderverdeeld in verschillende stadsdelen die weer zijn onderverdeeld in buurten en wijken. Zie de overzichten onderaan deze pagina.

De grootstedelijke agglomeratie telt zo'n 1,0 miljoen inwoners. Daarbij is het de grootste agglomeratie in Nederland qua inwoneraantal. De gehele stedelijke regio heeft naar schatting ruim 2 miljoen inwoners. Tot deze regio kan gerekend worden het gebied tussen Alkmaar, Zaanstad, Purmerend, Almere, Diemen, Abcoude, Amstelveen, Hoofddorp, Haarlem en IJmuiden.

Amsterdam staat op de ranglijst van de duurste steden ter wereld in 2007 op de 25e plek volgens de jaarlijkse Cost of Living Survey uitgevoerd door Mercer Human Resource Consulting. Vergeleken met een 41ste plek een jaar eerder.

De multiculturaliteit van Amsterdam kan worden onderstreept met het feit dat in Amsterdam op 1 januari 2007 er 175 verschillende nationaliteiten in de stad woonden.  Daarmee voert Amsterdam de mondiale ranglijst aan. (Bron: Wikipedia)
